Common Course Numbering

Common Course Numbers
California Community Colleges have introduced a streamlined approach for students to transfer credits by adopting the Common Course Numbering (CCN) system under AB 1111. This initiative assigns identical course numbers and titles to comparable classes throughout all California community colleges, allowing students to quickly recognize which courses fulfill equivalent transfer requirements statewide. The CCN system also simplifies the process of moving to institutions such as the University of California (UC) or the California State University (CSU) system. By standardizing course designations, it provides clarity and consistency for students as they plan their educational journeys.

Rollout of Common Course Numbering

Santa Rosa Junior College is updating its course numbering in several phases over the next few semesters. The first phase is scheduled to begin in Fall 2025. From that point forward, any course listed as “previous course” in the table below will switch to its new Common Course Number (CCN). For example, a course previously listed as MATH 15 (Elementary Statistics) may now be listed as STAT C1000.

What Does This Mean?

When registering for Fall 2025 classes, students should use the Schedule of Classes to look up the new course number, as listed in the table below.

What will appear in my portal and my transcript?

Students will see the “previous course” for any classes taken during or before Summer 2025. On or after Fall 2025, students will see the new common course numbering system. All Common Course Numbering courses start with a "C" in the catalog number. An example is shown below.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AB1111: Common Course Numbering (CCN)? The California Community College system is introducing a new, student-focused approach known as the Common Course Numbering (CCN) system, in accordance with Education Code Sections 66725–66725.5, established by Assembly Bill 1111 (Berman). This initiative, set for full implementation by July 1, 2027, will standardize course numbers for equivalent classes across all community colleges in California. The purpose is to make transferring credits to four-year universities more seamless and to help students avoid taking redundant classes. By improving credit portability, the CCN system aims to expand fair access to transfer opportunities and assist students in crafting well-structured academic plans, understanding how their coursework transfers, and making informed choices about their classes. The project is a joint effort involving faculty, administrators, staff, and system leaders, all working together to benefit California’s community college students.
Why is this important to me? If you’ve taken classes at any California Community College before Fall 2025, this change is especially relevant to you. Since course numbers and names are being updated, you’ll want to check carefully to prevent accidentally repeating a course you’ve already completed.
Why Fall 2025? When colleges update courses, they do it during an academic year.  Fall semester is the typical start of the academic year. Fall 2025 marks the start of the 2025–2026 academic year, and this is when the first phase of the CCN rollout will begin. Additional phases will also launch in subsequent Fall semesters.
How will I know when a course is part of the CCN group? Courses that are part of the Common Course Numbering system will be marked with a “C” in their catalog number—for example, a class previously listed as ENGL 1A will now appear as ENGL C1000.
Will courses that are not part of the CCN system continue to transfer? Yes, courses that haven’t been included in the CCN system will still be eligible for transfer under existing agreements between community colleges and four-year institutions.
Where can I find more information about the CCN system? For more details about the Common Course Numbering project, visit the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office website.
I have completed an ed plan in SIS. Will the CCN be automatically updated in my ed plan? No, your educational plan in SIS will not update automatically. To ensure accuracy, use the CCN crosswalk table above to find the new course number and enter it manually when registering for classes on the Schedule of Classes web page.
Who do I contact for assistance with CCN questions? For any questions or assistance regarding the Common Course Numbering system, reach out to SRJC Counseling.
Where can I find more information about CCN? For updates and background on the implementation of CCN, please see the websites of the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and Academic Senate for California Community Colleges.
